Recommendations

Wanna know where to go when you visit New Orleans, huh? We’re going to center them around our house on Elysian Fields Ave, so your milage may vary.

Groceries

  • Robert’s is just three blocks down Elysian Fields and is very good and affordable. Has liquor/beer.

Bourbon Street Drinks

  • Of all the Bourbon street drinks, Brian thinks the Hand Grenade is the best, both for taste and to get you drunk (several locations along Bourbon, expect $12).
  • Alicia’s favorite is the “Purple Drank” available at Laffite’s Blacksmith Shop, Bourbon and St. Phillip.
  • Walk half a block off Bourbon street to get your booze, you’ll save $$$. Highly recommend Erin Rose, Bourbon and Conti.

Food

Breakfast:

  • Frenchman All Day Cafe is great for breakfast.
  • AYU Bakehouse is a fantastic bakery, great croissants. Alicia recommends the ‘shroom boom.
  • Elizabeth’s is our favorite brunch spot, it’s in the Bywater neighborhood, which is a great walk. Great Bloody Marys!
  • Ruby Slipper has several locations around NOLA, decent, the closest is less than half a mile away on Decatur St.

Casual / Lunch:

  • Margot’s is a fantastic pizza place that is super close, but limited hours.
  • Shift @ Brieux Carre is open Thursdays thru Monday and has a crazy menu, including lefse!!!
  • The Hot Food bar at Robert’s grocery store has surprisingly good fried chicken from 11am until 7pm-ish.
  • The St. Roch Market is the closet place to get great oysters, but has a wide variety of other food (Sri Lankan, Tacos, classic cajun).
  • Artisan Bar is good classic American (pork chop, burger, BLT).
  • Buffa’s has great Gator/Boudan balls, but Alicia recommends anything at Buffa’s with their crawfish sauce.

Sit Down / Dinner:

  • Le Petit Grocery is an Uber ride away in the Garden District but is Alicia’s favorite. The menu changes regularly, so no specific thing to aim for.
  • n7 is classic french food, very romantic with outdoor dining.
  • Palador 511 is our neighbor’s favorite – Italian and vegetarian options.
  • Port of Call is great burgers and steaks.
  • Bayona is good for a fancy NOLA meal, offers classic NOLA food in the French Quarter.

The best inspiration is this video from The Simpsons (link). NewOrleans.com has a list (link) of everything in the video and a place to grab it.

Also, if you see the guy yelling “HOT TAMALES,” consider buying, they’re really good and he’s a local icon.

Bars

  • Brieux Carre for beer.
  • Pepp’s Pub is Alicia’s favorite bar ever.
  • Emporium, try the ByWatermelon cocktail.
  • No Dice.

Live Music

  • Across the street is Madame Vic’s, we’re good friends with the owner. Shows are Friday and Saturday, usually start at 7pm.
  • Anything on Frenchman Street will be fun.
  • Siberia is Elysian Fields and St. Claude and usually heavy metal.

Stuff to Do

  • Pinball at Emporium!
  • Highly recommend a walk into the Bywater, at least to see the giant murals around Dauphine St and Montegut St. While you’re walking that way, Pepp’s Pub is owned by ex-Minnesotan and named after their dog (who is usually around).
  • Coffee at St. Roch Market is awesome, it’s got 7+ food vendors.
  • Elizabeth’s is also the best Bloody Mary in the city, highly recommend it for brunch.
  • The Country Club is a bar / restuarant / pool for rent, adults only.
  • Crescent City Park leads to the Bywater from Elysian Fields and gives fantastic views of the city. It’s about 1 mile end-to-end.
  • Kajun’s Pub offers karaoke 7 days a week.
